Living in a world filled with music, humans have naturally developed implicit knowledge about music. Without us realizing how it works, the tension and resolution in our favorite songs elicit an array of emotions that move us. Unfortunately, middle school students often don’t realize how much they already know about music and give up music at a stage critical for their aesthetics and identity development because they don’t feel “musical” enough. Wolfgang is an expressive musical toy where players apply physical tension to change musical tension, thereby making musicking an intuitive, embodied, playful and social experience for novice music learners.
